January 1, 2023 - Mary and Zio

Overall the beach looked pretty good for post king tides and fireworks. Uptick in small plastic fragments found in drift line. Less trash than summer found from picnics (it's been a stormy week), but closer to higher concentration areas trash and spent fireworks were found. read more

February 6, 2022 - Mary and Zio

A warm February day. About 40 people within the mile out enjoying the sunshine and low winds. Kids playing in the sand, a few kites, and several groups with multiple dogs walking the beach.

The beach was relatively clean except at the drift line. Small items like plastic fragments, styrofoam pieces, more

December 31, 2021 - Mary and Zio

A relatively calm day before the first King tide of 2022. Lots of folks out milling about enjoying the sunny day. Several sections of rope were found intertwined in kelp piles. Large pieces of styrofoam and then smaller pieces likely from those larger ones found. Very little wildlife observed. more

September 14, 2021 - stu and barb

Observed approx. 40 people, 17 dogs, and just a few seagulls.  A very clean drift line including several large jellyfish.  The high tide line and beach fire sites contained the typical momentos left by inconsiderate beach visitors...cans, bottles, plastic, socks (3), masks (2), poop bags (2), and half a dozen beach more

June 10, 2021 - stu and barb

A fair number of people and dogs, but just 10-12 seagulls.  Debris collected was typical...beach toys, pieces of plastic, cans and bottles, plastic bags and wrappers, small pieces of rope, and way too many poop bags.  Also found a large tangle of crabbing rope that had been at sea for more

  • A pretty clean beach except for this large pile of bull kelp
  • A true picnic on the beach…table and all.
  • Our beautiful clean beach
  • A large tangle of rope with a powerful aroma
March 12, 2021 - stu and barb

A lot of people and dogs as it was a warm and calm afternoon.  Shoreline modifications were the result of strong winds and high tides in mid Jan.  Some riprap (1 1/2 to 1) will require repairs. The 2 to 1 riprap held up well, but a lot of the accumulated more

December 1, 2020 - stu and barb

Beach was pretty clean, just a few shells and rocks, mostly due to the current high tides.  All the debris, both human and natural, was in the high tide line.  Gathered one full bag of the usual stuff...cans, rope, plastic pieces, and styrofoam...mostly from boats.  Nothing particularly unusual, except more

September 28, 2020 - stu and barb

Found more garbage  than expected, but less than usual, thanks to the Solve cleanup a week ago.  Usual stuff, but more flip flops than ever??  plus a life vest & lots of beach never more

June 16, 2020 - stu and barb

A pretty clean beach with lots of seagulls and a fair number of people and dogs.  An unusual amount of crab shells and body parts on the entire mile, along with lots of seaweed and kelp.  Human debris was less than usual surely due to the lack of beach more

February 11, 2020 - stu and barb

A lightly travelled beach today with less than 20 people and 5 dogs.  Lots of debris left at the high tide line mostly due to the recent King Tides.  Besides the logs,  tree branches and other wooden debris, found lots of plastic rope, chunks of styrofoam, and plastic bottles more

November 3, 2019 - stu and barb

Nothing extraordinary today, but picked up more stuff than anticipated...lots of cans and bottles, numerous pieces of yellow plastic rope, a few beach balls and toys, and some more

August 12, 2019 - stu and barb

More trash than our last few walks...possibly due to the kite festival last week.  Lots of twine from bundled beach firewood, some fireworks remains, lots of plastic and leftovers from s’more party’s.  A long dead skate and seagull.  10 or so brown pelicans gliding over the waves, and numerous more

May 21, 2019 - stu and barb

Beach continues to be very bottles, no cans, no styrofoam!!!  Found only 10 or 12 items of plastic, an empty sand bag, and about 10 feet of crab ring rope that I was able to untangle from sticks ,branches, and dried seaweed. It’s likely to be a different story more

January 21, 2019 - stu and barb

A throwback to a couple years ago...the black sand is back along with some previously exposed remains of plastic rope and an assumed crab ring buried deep in the sand.  Very clean beach, probably the result of the King tide clearing out whatever was present.  Found just a small amount more

  • It’s sand
  • Sanderlings doing their thing
  • Hello again

November 8, 2018 - stu and barb

A particularly debris clean beach...could have put all of the rope pieces, plastic bottles(2) and misc. paper and plastic stuff in a gallon freezer bag!  Too bad there weren’t more people around to enjoy it...but lots of seagulls know a good beach when they see it.  I give it a more

February 23, 2018 - stu and barb

Way more people than expected on this cold and windy day.  The usual shells & small rocks decorated the sand and a handful of seagulls braved the elements.  Not a lot of beach junk but more plastic rope and styrofoam than average...most found near the R.B. Wayside area.  High seas more

November 29, 2017 - stu and barb

Just a handful of people (15) but lot’s of driftwood and small wood pieces, along with a generous smattering of pyrosomes that had drifted in from warmer seas.  Saw a few seagulls making a meal of those sea pickles.  On this calm overcast morning a few hours after high tide, more

June 5, 2017 - stu and barb

Pretty happy with the condition of our beach, especially just one week after Memorial Day and the kite festival crowds.  Picked up less than one bag of the routine bottles, cans, small plastics & paper...expected more.  60 or so post weekend beach goers enjoying the nice clean sand.  Just rocks, more

February 7, 2017 - stu and barb

Pretty typical Feb. afternoon...24 people and 7 dogs braving the windy & cloudy beach, with rain coming soon.  Recent high tides have left their mark on the dunes and streams.  Modest amount of human debris...the usual aluminum cans, plastic bottles, rope and assorted stuff (one bag was sufficient).  Lots more

November 10, 2016 - stu and barb

A beautiful morning to do our walk, this time with the help of our granddaughter Josie. Nothing unusual to report, just the everyday variety of "human" debris...lots of paper, plastic, cans, cigarette butts, abandoned beach toys & assorted clothing...two full kitchen bags worth.  There were a lot of beach lovers more

June 4, 2016 - stu and barb

Based on the small amount of garbage picked up on my "litter patrol", one would be surprised to know that it was just a week ago that Rockaway Beach hosted it's annual kite festival during Memorial Day weekend...good job people!! Found several beach toys, a blanket, tissues, a few more

March 7, 2016 - stu and barb

This is the way you like to find your mile...very clean beach, and lots of people, dogs, and birds enjoying it. Picked up some assorted pieces of plastic and styrofoam and two bottles...but not nearly as much as expected. Not much in the way of rocks or shells either, more

A mostly clean beach prevails after the Labor Day weekend. 30 or so people and about as many seagulls out enjoying the day. Saw 16 dead common murres, but probably a lot more covered in the sand. Modest amount of garbage ( 1 kitchen bag) plus 1/3rd of a more
May 18, 2015 - stu and barb
Plenty of people and dogs out enjoying a cloudy, mild late afternoon. Unfortunately, there was also plenty of garbage and debris to be found as well. Filled two kitchen garbage bags with assorted plastic rope & bottles, beer and pop cans (they don't burn well, but people keep trying), paper, more
February 11, 2015 - stu and barb
About as good as it gets in February...mid 50's & calm...a most pleasant day! Beach was pretty clean, but still managed to fill a kitchen garbage bag full with plastic, rope, bottles and Styrofoam. Much more is probably covered by sand blown by the recent storms...will get to that more

November 21, 2014 - stu and barb
No one on the beach this morning...brutal weather today with 20-30 mph wind, sideways rain, and blowing sand. Any debris is now well concealed and very few shells are visible. Large piles of bull kelp that were driven ashore a month ago are now decomposing and buried by sand. Batches more
September 5, 2014 - stu and barb
What a special day to be at the coast...warm, calm, and a really clean beach. Just a smattering of left over 4th of July stuff...most debris was picked up near old camp fire sites. For the most part, our beach visitors are being very thoughtful. Observed lots of red more

February 25, 2014 - stu and barb

Beautiful, clean beach this pre-Thanksgiving week. Someone had already gathered 6 plastic bottles and set them by an access trail...and that was the bulk of debris to pick up. A smattering of diatoms at the high tide line, a few seagulls and crows looking for lunch...just the way you want more
September 2, 2013 - stu and barb
Lot's of people enjoying a beautiful day at the beach, but disappointed in the amount of "stuff" found on this late afternoon of Labor Day. Too many people still don't get the message. It's not much consolation, but at least it wasn't tsunami generated bottles and styrofoam....just good old more
May 20, 2013 - stu and barb
Given the dreary forecast, we took advantage of a fine spring day to tour our mile in Rockaway Beach. Everyone we saw was enjoying a sunny yet breezy afternoon, with very little seaweed, shells, rocks, or even birds to be found. Lots of kites...three just resting, three practicing stunts, and seven were more

We experienced the "calm before the storm" on the beach this morning. Had we reported on 7/5, we would no doubt see many more people, debris (tons of red sticks and cardboard and plastic from fireworks), and litter from bonfires. The beach was relatively free of debris and litter more
April 10, 2010 - ducks73
