A welcome calm, partly sunny hour on Mile 194 amid what has been several days of hail, high winds and rain. Observed a group of 5 black oystercatchers and 2 additional single ones; a small feeding flock of surfscoters, one sea lion rolling around in the waves approximately 50yards out in...read more

Fun to see the spout of a whale just beyond the surf at the southern border of Mile 194 this morning! Enjoyed observing a group of striped shore crabs as they were feeding and dancing/hiding. A group of four black oystercatchers were quite vocal today! Only a small tote bag...read more

Notably warmer weather this December than last year [no gloves or knit hat necessary]! Clear, mostly sunny afternoon after a 9.6ft high tide this morning around 11a. No obvious cliff/bluff erosion. More empty mussel shells than usual. And the great news is no litter other than one tennis ball! Enjoyed watching...read more

A beautiful, peaceful morning on Mile 194 at a negative tide. Less marine litter collected than a few months ago. People were enjoying the trail, pebble shoreline and tidepools respectfully. No shoreline wildlife in apparent distress. No physical changes noted. read more

A blustery day on the beach today. No concerns or significant changes noted, but as I'm new to CoastWatch, I'm still taking note of the normal baselines. I spotted one Black Oystercatcher on the south end of the mile. Also noted a pair of Killdeer at the north end. Picked...read more

I walked this mile in the early morning hours and only saw two people.  Tide was low, but incoming.  Light breeze and moderate inversion layer.  This shoreline is surprisingly free of litter.  Micro plastics may be found if one sifts through the sand.  The shoreline from Yachats SP to about...read more

28 Nov 2016 Smelt Sands Beach, Yachats Oregon. NOT JTMD. Polystyrene filled concrete float washed onto beach in late morning. Broken on impact of beaching.  Remaining surfaces that had been below waterline were covered with, primarily, Balanus nubilus (up to 80 mm diameter) and Semibalanus cariusus. The balanoids...read more
