Mile 174 is largely deserted, mainly because it is easily accessible only from the northern part of Mile 175. There was some litter on the beach, together with various shells and seaweed. A few shore birds were scurrying about at the southern end of Mile 174.read more

Footprints leading quite a ways into the snowy plover restricted area. They went right around the sign saying to keep out. Beach Ranger has been contacted.Hugh collection of trash along the high tide line. Have never seen this before on my mile. Could not have taken it all out.read more

Two loud thunder rolls and then rain! What fun - sun came out eventually to a beautiful day. Found several things as mentioned: possibly dead pelican, 2 dead sharks, plover protection fence disappearing under sand.read more

Log washed up with numerous shells attached. Haven't seen that before. Uploading photo.Lovely overcast day on beach. Not any people or dogs on my mile except one transient. He appears to have come from the dunes area and looked to have been there 1-2 days.read more

Bad day for Dungeness Crabs! Millions of newly hatched crabs washed up along shore line & high tide line - as far as the eye could see! Pictures do not do the numbers justice. Also, took picture of "rainbow" effect on water in low sand areas.read more

The Siuslaw News reports that a 28-foot male humpback whale has washed ashore on this mile. It was spotted last weekend by a Coast Guard flyover. Apparently the whale died after something bit its tongue off and it was unable to eat.

Three people walking on the beach had crossed over from the Sutton Creek Campground. Otherwise the beach showed little sign of human or wildlife activity. There was remarkably little litter or debris on the beach.read more 2010

It was a beautiful morning on a relatively clean beach. I was passed three times be a white Forest Service truck that was driving along the beach going north, then south, then north again.
